In 2009, it was reported that over 1.6 million people live in nursing homes in the United States with another million living in longterm care or assisted living facilities. As the baby boom generation gets older, there will be a higher demand for all of these facilities. If you are looking into nursing home care for your loved one, it is important to do thorough research on the incidences of nursing home abuse and neglect in these facilities. Here are a few of the statistics that popped up in our research:

  1. One study showed that 44% of nursing home residents have suffered from some type of abuse. 48% have reported being handled roughly. 38% have witnessed abuse of others.
  2. Roughly 30% of long term care staff has witnessed some form of physical abuse of a patient and 81% have reported to have seen some form of verbal, physical, or other type of abuse over this time. 40% of nursing home staff have reported to having committed one of these acts at least once over this time.
  3. 66% of nursing home residents suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive impairment which limits their ability to take care of themselves or report abuse.
  4. About 1/3 of all nursing homes or long term care facilities have been cited for violations. About 10 percent were cited for physical abuse.
  5. 85 percent of nursing home facilities cite staffing shortages as the cause for the abuse.

According to many different sources, the most alarming statistic may be that only 20 percent of abuse cases are reported. There are several possible reasons that these instances do not get reported. For one, many of these victims are mentally impaired.
